Honraku-ji is a truly special temple and one of my favorite temples in Japan. A stunning Zen garden unfolds against the backdrop of the Yoshino River—a design you won't find anywhere else in Japan. It’s a tranquil spot where you can sit on the veranda, feel the history, and take in the view. Beyond the main rock garden, you'll find a lush mossy area with a small waterfall, offering a completely different, deeply peaceful atmosphere. For a truly memorable experience, you can enjoy a cup of matcha in the traditional tea room perched on a large rock, overlooking the serene landscape. You need to book in advance for tea or a meal, and have the option to book a full 4-hour tea ceremony if you're interested. The peaceful environment and incredible Zen garden make this temple not just worth a visit, but worth a detour.
