Rauðhólar (Icelandic pronunciation: [ˈrœiðˌhouːlar̥]) is a seasonal sight to behold located on the southeast outskirts of Reykjavík, Iceland. These remnants of a cluster of rootless cones are made up of a material with an interesting reddish hue due to iron oxides and they’re located in Elliðaárhraun [ˈɛtlɪːðaˌaur̥ˌr̥œiːn] lava fields next to South Iceland part of Hringvegur. The name “Rauðhólar” directly translates to “Red Mounds”. While these beautiful land forms are now a protected nature reserve, their gravel was once used for projects like Reykjavík Airport and road building. For locals and visitors alike, observations of these rootless cone groups ignite passionate wonder and appreciation of a lighter side of volcano activity.
