The Asahidake Ropeway is a dream come true for backcountry skiers in Hokkaido. Asahidake is a ski area that consists of just one tram and then mostly backcountry terrain (there are a few marked runs that get you to the bottom, but they are not the reason to visit Asahidake). At the base of the tram there is just a collection of a few hotels and nothing else, so it is a place for a few days where you just ski, onsen and sleep. The mountain itself is an active volcano and it is a tourist attraction for the steam-vents that are constantly spewing sulfury steam. Being a volcano also means it has a quick section of very followed by a longer-mellower run-out. So, don't expect huge backcountry lines, but overall the place is really unique and fun to experience
