Getting Around Yufuin: Walk, Bike & Slow Down
Yufuin is best explored on foot—most attractions are within walking distance of the station.

Unlike Beppu or Nagasaki, you don't need to worry about buses or complicated transit in Yufuin. The town is compact, walkable, and designed for a slower pace.
Most visitors arrive at JR Yufuin Station and walk through Yunotsubo Kaido, the town's main shopping street, on their way to Lake Kinrin. The route is lined with cafés, dessert shops, boutiques, and local craft stores.
Approximate walking times from Yufuin Station:
🛍️ Yunotsubo Kaido: 5 minutes
🌊 Lake Kinrin: 20–30 minutes
♨️ Many ryokan and public baths: 10–20 minutes
🚲 Rental bicycle shops: 2–5 minutes
Things to know:
Yufuin gets busy between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., especially on weekends and holidays.
Consider renting an electric bicycle if you want to explore beyond the main tourist area or visit viewpoints around the Yufu Basin.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential—the streets are mostly flat, but you'll likely spend several hours exploring on foot.
Taxis are available near the station if you're staying at a ryokan farther from the center.
My tip: Arrive early. Visit Lake Kinrin before the crowds, then make your way back toward the station through Yunotsubo Kaido at your own pace. Yufuin isn't a place to rush—give yourself time to wander side streets, stop for snacks, and enjoy the mountain views. That's part of the experience.
