More than just a cemetery, this is one of Réunion’s most atmospheric historic sites. The Cimetière Marin de Saint-Paul stretches right up to the crashing surf, with white-washed tombs shaded by frangipani and filao trees. It holds the graves of poets, pirates, colonial governors, and enslaved people. It's a layered, complex slice of island history in a strikingly peaceful setting.

Famed local writer Leconte de Lisle is buried here, along with the supposed final resting place of the pirate Olivier Levasseur. The site is compact, open to the elements, and rarely busy. It’s a place that invites reflection more than tourism, especially when the wind picks up off the ocean.

👉 Stop by on a weekday morning. It’s cooler, quieter, and the soft light gives the tombs and ocean backdrop a calm, almost surreal beauty.
