You’ll want to start early for this one. The Piton de la Fournaise hike is unlike anything else on La Réunion. The terrain changes fast and the weather can mess with visibility. You leave Pas de Bellecombe before sunrise, following your certified guide across a cracked lava field that feels like another planet.

The guided route takes you right to the edge of the main crater (Dolomieu), not just the outer trail most casual hikers stop at. You’ll pass the Formica Leo crater early, but it’s just the warm-up. The real reward comes after a long descent into the caldera and a slow, steady climb through volcanic debris and hardened lava waves.

Your guide explains how this volcano erupts — it’s one of the most active in the world, but safely so — and points out new flows from recent years. You’ll also hear stories about how the island’s residents live with an erupting neighbor and what’s being done to monitor future activity. Most locals have climbed it at least once in their lives, but few get the crater-top view with someone who knows the terrain this well.

👉 Bring at least 2L of water, layers for quick temperature drops, sunscreen, and snacks. Sturdy hiking boots are non-negotiable. No toilets once you’re in the caldera.

👉 Local tip: if you’re staying in Bourg-Murat or La Plaine-des-Cafres, you’re only 30–40 mins away. That’s a much easier pre-dawn start than coming from the West Coast.
