High Force is one of England’s most gorgeous waterfalls, where the River Tees plunges 70 feet into a deep, swirling pool below. It’s an impressive sight at any time of year, but after rainfall it becomes even more powerful — loud, dramatic, and impossible to ignore.

This walk to High Force is one of my absolute favourite walks in Northern England. It’s scenic, and incredibly rewarding, especially if you arrive early. I highly recommend getting here before 8–9am and parking at Low Force Lay-by on the B6277 (Barnard Castle DL12 0XF). It’s a free lay-by with space for around 10 cars, and arriving early almost guarantees a spot. When we arrived at 8am, there was just one other car there.

Before you even start walking, you’re treated to wide open views across the North Pennines. There’s a bench overlooking the valley which makes a perfect spot for a pre-hike coffee and a moment to soak it all in.

From the lay-by, follow the public right of way through open fields and then into woodland. Within a few minutes of walking, you'll see Low Force waterfall. If you arrive before 9am, there’s a good chance you’ll have it completely to yourself.

From here, cross the Wynch Bridge suspension bridge, offering great views back over the river and falls. On the far side, there’s a second viewpoint over Low Force which is well worth stopping for.

Continue along the riverside path beside the River Tees. This stretch of the walk is calm and scenic, passing a few stepping stones and gentle river bends along the way. Once you reach Holwick Head Bridge, keep straight on the riverside path instead of crossing it. Before long, you’ll hear the unmistakable roar of High Force ahead.

A short climb brings you to an elevated viewpoint overlooking the waterfall and gorge. This viewpoint is completely free and, in my opinion, offers one of the best views of High Force — dramatic, wild, and far less busy than the paid lower viewpoint.

If you’re short on time or prefer an easier option, you can also visit High Force via the paid path from High Force Hotel. This short walk takes around 5–10 minutes and leads to the base of the waterfall.

Good to know: The full riverside walk is mostly flat with gentle elevation and takes around 1.5–2 hours return. Paths can be muddy and slippery after rain.

Best time to visit: Early morning for quieter views, or outside peak summer weekends.

Pro tip: Visit after heavy rainfall — this is when High Force truly earns its name.
