How to Get There

Demchok Café is located on the route to Demchok village, just after the Umling La Pass descent, in Ladakh’s far southeast. It’s right by the roadside, operated by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). The spot is easy to recognize by the BRO signage and a simple structure near the road. Access requires a vehicle with good clearance, and valid Inner Line Permits, as this is a sensitive border zone.

What to Expect

This is not your typical café, it’s a BRO-run refreshment point meant primarily for army personnel and on-duty road teams, but they welcome travelers too. You’ll find chai, coffee, instant noodles, and occasional samosas, served hot. No seating, no service frills, just a few crates, thermos cans, and friendly BRO staff. At nearly 19,000 feet, the air is thin and cold, so even a basic cup of tea feels like a luxury here.

For the Curious

  • Frequently referred to as the highest café in the world, situated just below Umling La (19,024 ft).

  • The café is part of BRO’s morale and logistics support in one of the most remote and high-altitude areas in India.

  • Its existence reflects the BRO’s dual role, building infrastructure and supporting life in harsh zones.

  • Often featured in road trip stories for its surprise presence in such an extreme environment.

Good to Know

  • Run by: BRO, not a commercial operator.

  • Timings: Open during daylight hours (typically 9 AM to 5 PM); may close during weather disruptions.

  • Best visited: May to September, when the road is accessible.

  • Respect the space: photos are okay outside, but avoid military subjects or posts nearby.
