After two weeks in Kyoto, Teramachi-dori became our go-to shopping street. The covered arcade is perfect (especially when it rains), and it's got this great mix of everything - from traditional craft shops where you can find that perfect tea bowl to modern stores selling whatever you need.

What makes it special is how it strikes this perfect balance. Sure, there are tourists around (and you'll definitely hear some English), but it never feels overwhelming like some of Kyoto's more famous spots. You've got your genuine Kyoto craft shops right next to places selling anime merchandise, traditional sweet shops alongside modern cafes.

Pro tip: This is where you want to do your souvenir shopping in Kyoto. The prices are generally better than in the ultra-touristy areas, and you get a much wider selection. Plus, after a couple of visits, you start to feel like a local, knowing exactly which shops have what you're looking for.

Fun fact: While "tera" means temple in Japanese, and there are indeed some temples along the way, most people come here for the shopping rather than the spiritual experience!
