Tucked into the foothills of Connemara’s misty mountains, reflected perfectly in the still waters of Pollacappul Lake, Kylemore Abbey feels like something out of a dream. The grey stone castle rises against a backdrop of deep green hills and drifting clouds — a vision that instantly captures the heart. Originally built in the 1860s as a romantic gift from Mitchell Henry to his beloved wife Margaret, the estate carries an air of both grandeur and tenderness. You can almost sense the love that shaped it — in the graceful towers, the lakeside walkways, and the care taken with every detail. But behind its beauty lies a bittersweet story: Margaret died young while travelling abroad, and Mitchell built a small neo-Gothic church nearby as a memorial, often called “the cathedral in miniature.”
