Fushimi Inari Taisha is my absolute favorite place in Kyoto—I never miss a chance to visit whenever I’m in the city. The thousands of red torii gates wind their way up the mountain, a journey that takes about 2–3 hours round trip to the summit. Each gate, inscribed with Japanese characters, carries stories of prayers and gratitude from those who donated them. The climb, with its countless steps, can be challenging, but the unique atmosphere and breathtaking views along the way make every step worthwhile.

Tips to Avoid Crowds
Fushimi Inari is extremely crowded so here’s how to enjoy a more tranquil visit:

  1. Arrive Early: The shrine is open 24/7, so visiting at dawn lets you avoid the crowds and soak in the peaceful morning atmosphere.

  2. Stay Late: Evening visits can also be quiet, and the illuminated gates add a mystical charm.

  3. Venture Higher: Most visitors stop at the lower sections of the trail. Continue your climb further up the mountain to enjoy quieter paths and more personal moments with the gates.

What to Expect

  • The Torii Gates: The thousands of vermilion gates are the highlight of Fushimi Inari. Each gate is donated by individuals or businesses, and the inscriptions show the donor’s name and date. Walking through them feels like stepping into another world.

  • The Stairs: The climb to the summit can take 2–3 hours round trip, depending on your pace. It’s a workout, but the unique gates and the occasional rest areas with beautiful views make it enjoyable.

  • Sub-Shrines and Fox Statues: Along the way, you’ll find smaller shrines and statues of foxes, considered messengers of the deity Inari.

How to Get There
Fushimi Inari Taisha is easily accessible:

  • From Kyoto Station: Take the JR Nara Line to Inari Station (5 minutes), and the shrine entrance is a 2-minute walk from the station.

  • From Gion/Shijo Area: Take the Keihan Main Line to Fushimi Inari Station (7 minutes), then walk about 5 minutes.
