Nykurhylsfoss, also known as Sveinsstekksfoss, is a hidden gem of a waterfall located in Fossárdalur in Iceland's Eastfjords. Despite its off-the-beaten-track location, it has been attracting curious visitors who are looking to break up their long drives or have stumbled upon the car park and picnic area nearby. The waterfall gets its name from the mythical creature called nykur, which was said to lure people onto its back for a ride before drowning them in the nearby Nykurhylur Pool. To reach the waterfall, visitors can either walk across a gated bridge and hike up a steep road or drive to a car park on the north side of the Fossá River. From there, they can enjoy a stunning view of the two-tiered waterfall cascading into the Berufjörður fjord. It's definitely worth a stop if you're exploring the Eastfjords and want to experience a lesser-known natural wonder.
