Keiss Castle sits rather precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea. As with many Scottish castles the current ruins were originally built atop a much older building around the 16th century. Upgrades, advancements and more modern technology were used to keep these important fortresses intact from weather, seas and invaders. 500 years later there efforts seem to have paid off!

At a Glance

Time needed: ~1.5h

Parking: Getting here is a little trickier than similar spots, park at Keiss Harbour, its usually quiet and just avoid blocking any other cars. Then its just a beautiful walk down the coast, across beaches and fields, it wont take long to see the castles silhouette dangling off the rock ahead.

Access: Uneven terrain, farmland, mud and rock.

Best time to visit: Sunset

Facilities: None. Closest in Wick

Good for: Photos, short walk, seaside

The Story

The castle was built by our familiar friend George Sinclair. It’s tall thin frame stands out among the jagged cliff edge and even on the roughest of days looks proud as it sits in silence in its long standing battle with time. But for how much longer?

Don’t Miss

• The fantastic silhouette from every angle

• Seals will often watch and follow you along the coast

• Beautiful stone and rock formations
