Simple ways to travel Mallorca more consciously, respectfully and responsibly

  • Visit in spring or autumn - traveling outside of peak summer helps ease the strain on Mallorca’s water, electricity and waste systems. You’ll enjoy emptier beaches, clearer trails, more welcoming locals and often better prices on flights and accommodation.

  • Stay in conscious, local places - support agroturismos, fincas and boutique hotels that invest in water conservation, solar energy or local produce. These places often offer deeper connections with the island, while keeping your money in the community that hosts you.

  • Be water and energy wise - Mallorca faces real drought conditions, especially in summer. Keep showers short, switch off lights and AC when not needed and say no to daily linen changes.

  • Travel with a lighter footprint - if renting a car, choose electric or compact models (easier for parking anyway). When hiking or cycling, stay on marked trails to protect native plants and wildlife corridors.

  • Respect wild places - Mallorca’s natural parks, like Mondragó, Albufera and the Serra de Tramuntana, are incredibly biodiverse. Stick to paths, don’t pick flowers or take shells and avoid flying drones in quiet zones.

  • Choose local seafood - overfishing is a serious issue in the Mediterranean. Eat at restaurants that serve local, seasonal catch (like cap roig or llampuga) and skip overstocked buffets. Ask where the fish comes from (many Mallorcan chefs are proud to tell you).

  • Reduce single-use waste - bring a reusable bottle, tote bag and even cutlery if you're planning beach picnics. Tap water in most urban areas is safe (or easy to filter) and many hotels now offer refill stations. It’s a simple way to cut down plastic, especially at beaches.

  • Use reef-friendly sunscreen - Mallorca’s coastline may not have coral reefs, but it does host a protected seagrass vital to marine life and water clarity. Choose reef-safe, biodegradable sunscreen without harmful chemicals. It’s better for the sea and usually better for you too.
