Ärjä is one of my absolute favorite places in Finland, and honestly, it’s crazy how few people or even locals know about it.
It’s a large island in Lake Oulujärvi, Finland’s fourth largest lake, near Kajaani. The island is known for its beautiful sandy beaches and rare dune landscapes. The water is crystal clear and perfect for swimming on warm summer days.

Getting there is pretty easy. During summer, the historic steamship S/S Kouta runs a few trips a week from Kajaani harbour next to the center of the city to Ärjä. You can also book a ride with local boat operators like Luonnollisesti Oulujärvi (they have accommodations as well). If you have your own boat, you’re free to explore at your own pace, but keep in mind that Oulujärvi is a big lake and weather can change quickly.

Once you arrive, you’ll find peace and nature at its finest. There are no shops or cafes (there is a cafe, but it's not always open) on the island, so bring everything you need. Camping is allowed, and there are dry toilets near the main landing areas. The sandy beaches and peaceful pine forests make Ärjä perfect for swimming, hiking, or just relaxing away from the crowds. Don't miss the chance to visit the sheep of Ärjänsaari, which are on the island for summer work between June 6th and August 15th, 2022. The island is part of the Rokua Geopark ridge formation, offering a unique natural experience.
