🧊 Fjallsárlón & Fjalljökull

🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 1, take the signed turnoff to Fjallsárlón Glacier Lagoon, just 10 minutes west of Jökulsárlón. There is a parking area with a small café and access to boat tours and walking trails along the lagoon edge. The glacier visible at the back of the lagoon is Fjalljökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible year-round. Summer and early autumn (June–September) offer the most dramatic ice formations and lagoon activity. Winter can bring atmospheric fog and frozen textures but the paths may be icy or closed in severe weather.

📸 Photography Tips:

Best time of day:
Morning to midday offers side light across the lagoon and better visibility into the glacier face. Evenings can bring dramatic light if clouds break behind the glacier.

Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for lagoon and glacier views. Telephoto to isolate icebergs, cracks in Fjalljökull, or birds on the ice. Drone is strongly recommended, the aerial contrast between blue ice, milky water, and glacier textures is outstanding, make sure to have a permit and to not disturb anyone while flying.

Composition ideas:

  • From the shoreline, frame floating icebergs with Fjalljökull as a dramatic backdrop

  • Drone shots over the lagoon show color gradients, iceberg movement, and glacier patterns, fly closer to the ice for aerial textures

  • Use side light to highlight the texture of the ice face and the reflection in the lagoon

  • In winter, minimalistic compositions with snow-covered icebergs and low fog are very effective
