🏖️ Rauðisandur Beach

🗺️ How to Get There:
Rauðisandur is accessed via Route 614, a gravel mountain road that descends steeply into the bay from the main Westfjords route (Route 62).
Coming from Patreksfjörður or Látrabjarg, follow Route 612 and then take the turnoff onto Route 614, which winds down to the beach area and Rauðisandur Café. The road is steep but doable in summer, even for 2WD in good conditions, though a 4x4 is recommended for comfort and safety. The road can be intimadating for unexperienced drivers.

📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best visited from late spring to early autumn, when the road is dry and fully open.
At low tide, the beach stretches endlessly and reveals beautiful sand patterns and tidal reflections, perfect for photography. In summer, the beach glows golden-red under warm evening light.

📸 Photography Tips

Best time of day:

  • Golden hour enhances the red hues and creates long shadows on the beach

  • Low tide exposes sandbanks and creates dramatic reflections

  • Overcast or foggy days create minimalistic compositions with soft contrast

Recommended gear:

  • Drone to explore the full scale of the beach and its shifting textures

  • Telephoto for compressing distant subjects like churches or cliffs and focusing on textures in the sand

  • Wide-angle lens for shooting from the ground with foreground footprints or driftwood

Composition ideas:

  • Use leading lines from the tide to guide the viewer into the frame

  • Shoot top-down to show abstract water-sand textures and color transitions
