Description:
The Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck is one of Iceland’s most iconic and surreal photo spots. In 1973, a US Navy DC-3 plane made an emergency landing on the black sand beach of Sólheimasandur. The wreckage was never removed, and today it sits against the stark landscape, creating a dramatic scene that feels otherworldly. The site is only accessible by foot — it’s about a 4 km (2.5 mile) walk each way from the parking area, taking around 45 minutes each way. There are no facilities at the wreck, so bring water and be prepared for Iceland’s often harsh weather conditions.
Price:
Visiting the plane wreck is free. Parking at the trailhead is also free. Guided South Coast tours that include the Sólheimasandur Plane Wreck usually cost around $100–150 USD per person.
