Snaefellsnes - 4 days

What you'll do

Snæfellsnes is one of the most magical places in Iceland in my opinion. The landscape changes so quickly in such a small distance. It just really is a miniature version of the entire Iceland. So if you don't have much time, but want to see many different things. This is where you need to go!

In this itinerary I'll show you where to go on this peninsula. In theory you could drive around the peninsula in a day, but there is so much to see! So I would advice to stay at least 2-4 days and really soak up all the beauty around you.

Day 1

Day one is a relaxed one. Maybe you just drove to Snæfellsnes from Reykjavík, maybe you just arrived to Iceland. So let's take it easy this first day. And if you get to stay at Midhraun, make sure you soak in their hot tub!

I have added several accommodations for you to choose from.

Blue Car Rental

Blue Car Rental

If you book through my link (below) you'll get a 5% discount on your car rental!

Blue Car Rental is right at Keflavík Airport, so you can pick up your car immediately after landing.

In case you are driving around Iceland in summer, you really only need a 4x4 by when you go into the highlands (on the F-roads). Other than that, you will be fine with a regular 2x2 car.

In winter you actually also don't really need a 4x4, but I personally feel more comfortable in one when there is a lot of snow or ice. So I would recommend taking a 4x4 that time of year. But if you are used to snow and feel fine in a regular car, that is fine as well. And in winter, all cars in Iceland (both regular and 4x4) have spikes in their tires, so you will have a lot more grip on the road when it is icy.

Hítarvatn

Sightseeing

Red road

The lake at the end of this road is not super spectacular, but the road towards it is pretty amazing I think. It is red gravel en makes for some beautiful pictures.

Just make sure this road is open, because in winter time this road is often closed.

3

Gerðuberg Cliffs

Sightseeing

Basalt cliffs

You can go for a walk on and around these basalt cliffs. At the end of summer you can pick blue berries on the slopes against the cliffs as well.

From here you can drive even further down the gravel road. It is a nice drive and you can visit a small waterfall at the end.

Ytri Tunga

Sightseeing

Seal watching at the beach

There are not many golden beaches in Iceland, but here you will find one. And this is also a perfect place to spot seals!

Hlaðan Veitingahús

This lovely restaurant at Miðhraun - Lava Resort has opened last summer (2022), so it is a brand new place. The restaurant venue looks amazing. Everything has been thought about and many things have been hand made. Which really gives a great atmosphere.

I was lucky to try the menu just before the official opening this year (1st of June 2023) and it did not disappoint. Óskar, the chef, did a great job representing the Icelandic cuisine. If you want to try local products (lamb and fish), I would definitely recommend going here.

I personally really loved the soup and the lamb!

Miðhraun - Lava Resort

This place is right in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by farm animals. This is the perfect place to stay with a family. You can have a look at the sheep stable and enjoy the magnificent views.

There's a great restaurant on site. I really loved the soup and the lamb, so if you want to try some local cuisine, this is the place to be.

And let's not forget the geothermal bath on site. It's big and beautiful and the changes rooms are right next to it, so it's all very convenient!

There's several different accommodations on site. There are private cottages (see photos), apartments, but also rooms with shared bathrooms. There is something for everyone in every price range.

Hótel Rjúkandi

HOTEL SNAEFELLSNES formally Hotel Rjukandi

This hotel is just in the perfect location if you want to travel around Snaefellsnes. You could drive around the whole peninsula in one day and have this your beginning and end place. That way you don't have to pack and unpack all the time.

And beside the perfect location it is also a really nice place!

Langaholt Hotel & Restaurant

I really liked staying at this hotel. It has beautiful rooms with private bathrooms. They have good breakfast included and in the evening you can eat at the onsite restaurant as well.

From here it is only a short distance to the beach, but you might encounter some artic terns (birds that like to attack when protecting their nest) there, so watch out for them.
