Emerald Lake is a stunningly beautiful and geographically unique lake located in the Yukon Territory of Canada. Known for its intense, lush green colour, this lake was formed by glaciers from the last ice age that eroded limestone gravels and deposited them in the shallow lake bed. The colour of the water comes from the light reflecting off white deposits of marl at the bottom of the lake. It is a natural hypoxic condition that gives rise to carbonate deposition and marl formation. Visitors to Emerald Lake will be captivated by its breathtaking beauty and surreal, otherworldly quality.

Eryn's TIps:

  • This lake is really only worth a visit if the ice has melted (during the summer months) as you cannot see the beautiful colours while there's ice ontop!

  • There's a massive pull-off next to the highway for visitors to stop and admire the lake, but I would recommend walking up the hill opposite the road to get a higher vantage point. This allows you to see the lake without the powerlines blocking the view for photos!
