Central Newfoundland might not be the first place you think of for sea kayaking, but my recent adventure with Adventures Newfoundland in the Bay of Exploits truly showcased it as a hidden gem for this thrilling activity. This area offers some of the best sea kayaking on the island, with options ranging from half-day tours to week-long expeditions into the wilderness.

I had the opportunity to embark on a full-day sea kayaking adventure that started with a boat ride from Fortune Harbour to the Exploits Islands, guided by the owner, Paul Langdon. Despite the bumpy ride, Paul's insights into the geological features, like the 450 million-year-old lava pillow crusts, enriched the journey. Newfoundland's natural history never fails to impress!

The weather initially turned grey and windy, which gave us a chance to warm up in Paul's cozy cabin with some coffee and scones—a perfect example of adapting to Newfoundland's ever-changing climate. This downtime also allowed for fascinating conversations with Paul about the area's rich history, especially the Beothuk Indians who originally inhabited these lands. Learning about the Beothuk while kayaking their ancient waters added a profound layer of depth to our adventure.

Once the weather cleared, we took to the kayaks. The Bay of Exploits, with its sheltered waters, made paddling a joy. We explored various sights, including a graveyard where John Peyton is buried and a lookout offering stunning views of the area. The serenity and beauty of paddling through these historic waters were simply breathtaking.

Our day concluded with a visit back to the cabin where Paul's wife, Joanna, served delicious salt fish cakes and cold beer as we watched the sunset—a perfect ending to an incredible day. Paul even provided a scenic boat ride back, complete with a sunset and a bald eagle sighting, encapsulating the magic of Newfoundland.
