The Mt Aspiring Hut Track is a stunning walk through the Matukituki Valley in Mt Aspiring National Park, about an hour from Wānaka. The track follows the West Matukituki River, winding past grassy flats, rugged peaks, and classic high-country farmland. It’s an easy to moderate 2–3 hour hike each way to reach the Mt Aspiring Hut, making it perfect for a day mission or overnight stay. There are so many spots to stop off at along the river, perfect to cool off in when you're hiking this track in the summer. About 5km into the hike, you'll see the large sandy patch - I sat here for a while with my book (pictured), it is so peaceful and quiet.
The trail is well-marked with very little elevation gain, but you’ll need to cross a few streams and deal with muddy patches after rain. The hut itself sits in a breathtaking alpine setting, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and views up toward Mt Aspiring / Tititea. It’s a serviced 29-bunk hut, so you’ll need a hut pass or tickets! Check the DOC site for booking.
I did this as a day hike, but people often stay in this hut overnight before continuing their hike up to French Ridge!

📈 Elevation: Minimal — mostly flat valley terrain
Can I stay overnight?
Yes! Mt Aspiring Hut is a DOC hut with around 30 bunks. From late October to April, you’ll need to book ahead online. Outside those months, it’s first come, first served and usually much quieter. Staying overnight gives you time to slow down, watch the stars, and soak up the peace of the valley.
Good to know
🌦️ The weather can change fast, even in summer — bring warm layers and a rain jacket.
💧 Water is available at the hut but should be boiled or treated before drinking.
🔥 There’s a wood burner for chilly nights (matches not supplied).
🚗 The last section of the road to Raspberry Flat is gravel but fine for most vehicles.
