The Milford Sound foreshore, also known as Piopiotahi, is the most iconic and accessible photo spot in the area—and, in my opinion, the most stunning. With Mitre Peak towering proudly in the centre and the foreshore creating mirror-like reflections at mid to high tide, it’s the ultimate reward at the end of the drive.

For photographers, late afternoon and sunset are the best times to be here. In autumn (March–April), the setting sun casts dramatic beams across Mitre Peak, creating an unforgettable scene.

There are plenty of vantage points to explore. You can wander down onto the foreshore itself, stepping out across rocks, sand, and mud, or follow the walking path to the edge. Just keep in mind that the tide moves quickly here—you can easily get cut off by the incoming water if you’re not careful.

Bring both a wide-angle lens (16–35mm) for sweeping landscapes and a zoom (70–200mm) to capture compressed shots of the mountains.
