Warning: This could be your most anxiety-inducing, frustrating part of your trip (or, not!)

The ferry between Gryllefjord, on the island of Senja, and the town of Andenes, on the island of Andøya, is a first-come, first-serve, ferry between islands where wait times can be up to 8 hours long in the highest peak of summer.

The ferry only runs three times per day, from the end of May through the middle of September, and check local timetables for times and updates.

The trip takes 1 hours and 40 minutes, one-way, and crosses open ocean—so it can be a bit rough. Thankfully this also doubles as an opportunity to spot whales and marine life as you cruise between islands!

But here's the thing: Unless you sleep at the dock the day before (which some people do), there's a pretty good chance you'll miss the first ferry and have to wait for the next one.

You can't buy tickets ahead of time, and camper vans take up more space on the ferry, so it's even tougher to get a spot on the boat.

Thankfully, there are enough things to do within walking distance that if you do have to wait, at least it's a nice view.
