Guatemala Travel Tips

  • The first thing I noticed was that things close very early. Guatemala isn't really known as a place you travel to "party" at, and stores and restaurants all close around 8pm. Yes, you will find bars that open later, but it's very hard to find food late at night, even street food.

  • Once you arrive in Guatemala City Airport (LUA), I recommend getting to your first destination via Uber. More drivers than you think will take you to Antigua or Lake Atitlan, and they are MUCH cheaper than booking shuttles.

  • Tap-to-pay doesn't work too well, so make sure you use chip insert when paying with your credit card.

  • A lot of locals don't know how to speak English, so use Google Translate to communicate. Psst - There are Spanish speaking classes in Lake Atitlan if you're looking to learn!

  • Have more cash on you than you think you need on hand. Our cash seemed to always disappear a few days earlier than we anticipated.

  • If you're booking stays for 3+ days, I recommend booking at least 1-2 months in advance. We weren't able to book any hotels we initially wanted to because we booked everything so last minute.

  • Have so much fun. People here are SO incredibly friendly and also want YOU to have an amazing time.
