Cinque Terre, Italy

Base:

  • La Spezia: ideal place to stay

  • Less touristy, cheaper accommodation, 7-min train to first village

The 5 Villages:

  • Vernazza – most scenic harbor, postcard views

  • Manarola – famous for sunset + wine vibes

  • Riomaggiore – classic Cinque Terre photo spot

  • Monterosso al Mare – biggest village + beaches

  • Corniglia – quiet hilltop village (no direct sea access)

Movement Strategy

  • Combine train + hiking, don’t rely on one only

  • Trains are fast but can get very crowded mid-day

  • Move early morning or late afternoon for breathing space

  • Stay in La Spezia to simplify logistics

Hiking Smart

  • Trails can be steep, narrow, and uneven. It can be challenging if not used to it.

  • Check trail status (closures are common) ; Off-season = fewer crowds but some trails may be closed

  • Do at least one scenic section, not necessarily all

  • Best route: Vernazza ↔ Monterosso or Riomaggiore ↔ Manarola (if open)

Photos & Spots x Timing:

  • Sunrise = empty villages, best photos

  • Midday = busiest (avoid heavy movement)

  • Sunset = Manarola or Vernazza (top picks)

Food to Try

  • Pansoti with walnut sauce. Sit down for pasta only when you have time to slow down

  • Pizza with pesto or stracchino cheese

  • Fried seafood in a cone (street food classic). Try Tutti Fritti (Riomaggiore) and La Bottega del Fritto (Vernazza)

  • Fresh focaccia; simple but elite here

  • Gelato; stop at Gelateria Vernazza and grab your fave

Drinks to Try

  • Aperol Spritz (sunset essential)

  • Sciacchetrà wine (local specialty)

What to Take Home

  • Limoncino

  • Pesto jars

  • Handmade pasta

  • Local wine
