Airports to Consider and Avoid

HOW BEST TO GET HERE

When considering an airport to fly into for your Southwest Colorado Fall adventure, Salt Lake City, Denver, and Albuquerque will be very tempting and likely cheapest, BUT all of these are 5-6 hours away, not to mention possible mileage restrictions with rental cars. They're not a convenient hub when you're considering limited time off and you will lose critical leaf-peeping time commuting back and forth to the airport. That's TWO less days of adventures.

WHICH AIRPORTS ARE BEST?

Best is obviously relative, BUT Montrose (MTJ) or Grand Junction (GJT) are usually cheapest and closest. Montrose is only 30 minutes from the San Juans, while Grand Junction is a little bit further at 1.5 hours.

FUN FACT -- Southwest Airlines now flies into Montrose and usually has some amazing deals. Sometimes even better than Denver.

OTHER AIRPORTS TO CHECK: Other possible options are Durango (DRO), Telluride (TEX), or Gunnison (GUC), however are usually more expensive. Its definitely worth a look when you're shopping around for airline tickets.
