I did this quite a number of years back and really enjoyed this hike. The island itself is very quaint and quiet. Mount Rishiri is a beautiful volcano often compared to Fuji however, its on the smaller side at 1,721 meters but is a prominent peak in the water. The main trail (Oshidomari) starts right from the port and begins with a gentle incline. It gradually gets steeper as you can imagine with the shape of the volcano. Check out the hiking trails below!
Hiking Routes:
Oshidomari Trail:
Starting Point: Near Oshidomari Port.
Distance: Approximately 12.9 km round-trip.
Elevation Gain: About 1,497 meters.
Duration: Around 10 hours (6 hours ascent, 4 hours descent).
Description: This is the more popular route up Mount Rishiri since it is closer to the ferry terminal (walking distance) and better maintained, though still fairly rough.
Kutsugata Trail:
Starting Point: Kutsugata Town on the island's west coast.
Distance: Approximately 12 km round-trip.
Elevation Gain: Similar to Oshidomari Trail.
Duration: Around 10 hours.
Description: This trail is less frequented, offering a quieter ascent with lush greenery and summer flowers.
Preparation and Tips:
Start Early: Begin your hike at dawn to ensure ample daylight, as the ascent and descent can take up to 12 hours.
Physical Fitness: The hike involves significant elevation gain, starting near sea level, making it more demanding than some other peaks.
Weather Considerations: Mount Rishiri's weather is unpredictable; check forecasts and be prepared for sudden changes.
Trail Conditions: Some sections are steep and rugged; proper hiking boots and gear are essential.
Water Supply: Carry sufficient water, as sources are limited along the trails.
Access:
From Wakkanai: Ferries operate between Wakkanai Port and Oshidomari Port on Rishiri Island. The journey takes approximately 100 minutes.
From Sapporo: Take a JR train or bus to Wakkanai, then transfer to the ferry. The total travel time is around 6 to 7 hours.
Accommodation:
Hokuroku Campground: Located near the Oshidomari Trailhead, this campsite offers a convenient base for hikers. Facilities are basic, so plan accordingly.
