Midagahara Hotel sits at 1,930 meters along the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, surrounded by Japan’s largest alpine wetland. It’s right next to several walking trails, all starting near the hotel.

There are three main routes:

  • Inner Course – A short 1 km boardwalk loop through the wetlands, takes about 30–40 minutes.

  • Outer Course – Around 2 km, with wider views, alpine plants, and a more open landscape. Takes 1–2 hours.

  • Caldera Observatory Course – A 40-minute walk to a viewpoint over the Tateyama Caldera and nearby steam vents.

The trails are easy to follow, with wooden paths and light slopes. In summer, expect green wetlands and flowers. In autumn, the grasses and shrubs turn deep red and gold. The hotel is simple but well-placed if you want to take your time walking and avoid the crowds higher up at Murodo.
