Mount Tsurugi, standing at 1,955 meters, is the second-highest peak in western Japan and a prominent feature of the Shikoku region. Despite its name, which translates to "Sword Mountain," the hike is accessible to many, thanks to well-maintained trails and facilities.

Hiking Details:

  • Trail Options: The primary trailhead begins at Minokoshi, where hikers can choose to either hike from the base or take a chairlift that ascends approximately 330 meters, reducing the hiking time. The chairlift ride lasts about 15 minutes and operates from mid-April to November.

  • Summit Ascent: From the top chairlift station, it's roughly a 90-minute hike to the summit. The path is well-marked and suitable for hikers of varying experience levels. Along the way, you'll traverse through lush alpine flora, which is particularly vibrant during the summer months.

  • Views: On clear days, the summit offers panoramic vistas, including sights of the Seto Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The area is also renowned for its autumn foliage, making late September to mid-October a popular time for visitors.

Access:

  • By Car: Driving is the most convenient way to reach Mount Tsurugi. From Tokushima City, it's about a two-hour drive to the Minokoshi parking area near the chairlift base. The route includes mountain roads, so ensure your vehicle is prepared for such terrain.

  • By Public Transport: Public transportation options are limited. Buses from JR Sadamitsu Station to Minokoshi operate primarily on weekends and holidays between April and November, with a journey time of approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. It's advisable to check the latest schedules in advance.

Additional Tips:

  • Seasonal Considerations: While the chairlift operates from mid-April to November, the best hiking conditions are typically from late spring to early autumn. Snow can linger into early summer, and weather conditions can change rapidly in mountainous areas.

  • Facilities: There are limited facilities on the mountain. It's recommended to bring sufficient water, snacks, and appropriate gear. Restrooms are available near the chairlift stations.

  • Cultural Significance: Mount Tsurugi is considered a sacred site and has historical significance in Shugendo, a Japanese folk religion centered on mountain worship. Visitors are encouraged to respect the natural environment and cultural sites encountered during the hike.

Embarking on a hike up Mount Tsurugi offers not only a rewarding physical challenge but also an opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty and cultural heritage of Shikoku.
