The Atomium is a popular and famous landmark building in Brussels, Belgium. Constructed as the centrepiece for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair (Expo 58), it was designed by the engineer André Waterkeyn and architects Andre and Jean Polak. The building stands at 102 metres tall and consists of nine stainless steel clad spheres which are connected in the shape of an iron crystal magnified 165 billion times. It has become one of the most recognisable symbols of Brussels and is a favourite tourist destination due to its spectacular views from the top sphere which houses a restaurant. Attractions include visiting the six visitable spheres that contain exhibit halls and other public spaces and being able to ride the escalators which are among the longest in Europe.
