This is a great short hike in the Whiteface Region of the Adirondacks that is often overlooked.

Typically overshadowed by Whiteface, Bear Den Mountain is a hidden gem that - in my opinion - doesn't get the attention it deserves. Bear Den is also one of the Lake Placid 9ers if you're partaking in the challenge.

The hike clocks in at roughly 3.2 miles round trip. It starts off pretty flat but then gets pretty steep and continues to climb for about 2/3 of the trail. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. Overall, it takes a little over an hour to get to the top with breaks.

I would consider this hike challenging for anyone who is not a seasoned hiker due to the near constant climb, which is a great workout.

At the top, you have fantastic views of the surrounding peaks and the ski slopes on Whiteface.

Notes:

  • In winter: You need microspikes and/or snowshoes

  • In summer: Use caution on the trail as there have been previous reports of ground bees

Looking for something a bit easier? For less of a hike and more of a walk-in-the-woods, Cobble Lookout is a great (and very easy!) alternative nearby.
