🇬🇧 When my friend Tamara – a certified wine expert and sommelier – invited us on a little wine tasting tour through Herzegovina, I was sceptical. Up until that day, I didn't really think Bosnian wines to be something super special „You‘re in for a pleasant surprise!“, she promised us as she turned the keys and started the car. And we were ‑ on that day, we visited five different wineries, we tried more than 30 different wines and when we came home in the evening, a little tipsy and full of cheese and ham and the memories of all the great talks we had, I was in love with Bosnian wines and the Herzegovina wine lands!

🇩🇪 Als meine Freundin Tamara - eine zertifizierte Weinexpertin und Sommelière - uns zu einer kleinen Weinverkostungstour durch die Herzegowina einlud, war ich skeptisch. Bis zu diesem Tag hielt ich bosnische Weine nicht wirklich für etwas Besonderes. "Ihr werdet angenehm überrascht sein", versprach sie uns, als sie die Schlüssel umdrehte und das Auto startete. Und so war es auch - an diesem Tag besuchten wir fünf verschiedene Weingüter, probierten mehr als 30 verschiedene Weine und als wir am Abend etwas beschwipst und voller Käse und Schinken und der Erinnerung an all die tollen Gespräche nach Hause kamen, war ich verliebt in bosnische Weine und das Weinland Herzegowina!

Day 1

🇬🇧 Here are a few of the wineries I have discovered in the last year and a half as well as some general information about the autochthonous grape varieties that can be found in Herzegovina. For all of them, I would recommend you make a reservation or call beforehand, as the tasting rooms don't really have opening hours (wine tourism. isstill only starting here). Enjoy or as the Bosnians would say: živjeli – to life!

🇩🇪 Hier sind einige Weingüter, die ich in den letzten anderthalb Jahren entdeckt habe, sowie einige allgemeine Informationen über die autochthonen Rebsorten, die in der Herzegowina zu finden sind. Bei allen empfehle ich, vorher zu reservieren oder anzurufen, da die Tasting Rooms nicht wirklich Öffnungszeiten haben (der Weintourismus steht hier noch ganz am Anfang). Genießt eure Wein-Tour oder wie die Bosnier sagen würden: živjeli - aufs Leben!

Bosnia-Herzegovina's autochthonous grapes

🇬🇧 Bosnia and Herzegovina has two autochthonous grape varieties:

Žilavka: a white wine variety which gives fresh, aromatic, and structured white wines aged in steel (also barrel-aged is available). Aromas of white flowers and yellow stone fruit are very usual.
Blatina: a red wine variety, shows itself with a deep shimmering ruby red, very fruity and tangy, with moderate acidity and velvety tannins. The result is very accessible red wines that make you want more.

🇩🇪 In Bosnien und Herzegowina gibt es zwei autochthone Rebsorten:

Žilavka: eine Weißweinsorte, die frische, aromatische und strukturierte Weißweine hervorbringt, die im Stahltank reifen (auch Fassreifung ist möglich). Aromen von weißen Blumen und gelbem Steinobst sind sehr verbreitet.
Blatina: eine Rotweinsorte, die sich mit einem tief schimmernden Rubinrot zeigt, sehr fruchtig und spritzig, mit mäßiger Säure und samtigen Tanninen. Das Ergebnis sind sehr zugängliche, sanfte Rotweine, die Lust auf mehr machen.

A piece of Tuscany in Bosnia-Herzegovina

🇬🇧 When I first tried the wine and Vinarija Marijanović I wouldn't trust my tastebuds – it's so fruity, fresh and flavourful and Marijanović is definitely one of my favourite Wineries in the country. Family-owned since four generations, quality is much more important for them than quantity so all their wines are strictly limited. I recommend doing a tasting of their wines with some mezze – typical Herzegovinian snacks like cheeses, cured meats and olives – and then enjoy the sunset and the view over the beautiful vineyards with a glass of wine in hand.

🇩🇪 Marijanović ist definitiv eines meiner Lieblingsweingüter des Landes. Als ich den Wein und Vinarija Marijanović zum ersten Mal probiert habe, konnte ich gar nicht fassen, wie gut er ist – so fruchtig und frisch. Seit vier Generationen in Familienbesitz, ist Qualität den Marijanovićs wichtiger als Quantität, daher sind alle Weine streng limitiert. Am besten gehst du am späten Nachmittag – dann kannst du den Ausblick über die Weinberge mit einem Glas Wein in der Hand zum Sonnenuntergang genießen.

Try the only Bosnian "Champagne"

🇬🇧 What, Bosnia and Herzegovina has its own Brut? Made from the autochthonous grape variety Zilavka that has already been drunken on the Austrian court in Vienna? When I heard, I couldn't believe it and ever since I tried Domano's very own Bosnian "champagne", I am a fan. It's incredible to see the work that needs to be put into every single bottle and at Domano they are happy to show visitors the process in detail before you get to try their brut and wine selection.

🇩🇪 Was, Bosnien und Herzegowina hat seinen eigenen Brut? Hergestellt aus der autochthonen Rebsorte Zilavka, die schon am österreichischen Hof in Wien getrunken wurde? Als ich davon hörte, konnte ich es kaum glauben und seit ich Domanos bosnischen "Champagner" probiert habe, bin ich ein Fan. Es ist unglaublich zu sehen, wie viel Arbeit in jeder einzelnen Flasche steckt, und bei Domano zeigt man den Besuchern gerne den Herstellungsprozess im Detail, bevor du ihre Brut- und Weinauswahl probieren kannst.

Stay overnight at a family winery with an amazing view

🇬🇧 When I first visited, I couldn't believe how beautiful this family-run winery is! When you enter their little estate, you are surrounded by rolling vineyards, the have their own pigs in the backyard and all vegetables and fruit are produced on their land as well. The Ostojić family is incredibly welcoming and hospitable and their little hotel offers a couple of rooms, a beautiful garden with hammocks and chairs to relax and of course this stunning pool with a view over the vines that you see on the picture.

🇩🇪 Als ich das erste Mal dort war, konnte ich nicht glauben, wie schön dieses familiengeführte Weingut ist! Wenn du das kleine Weingut betrittst, bist du von sanft geschwungenen Weinbergen umgeben. Die Familie Ostojić hat ihre eigenen Schweine im Hinterhof und auch das gesamte Gemüse und Obst wird auf ihrem Land angebaut. Die Ostojićs sind so herzlich und gastfreundlich und ihr kleines Hotel bietet ein paar Zimmer, einen schönen Garten mit Hängematten und Stühlen zum Entspannen und natürlich diesen atemberaubenden Pool mit Blick auf die Weinberge, den du auf dem Bild siehst.

🇬🇧 Brane, the wine maker of this little family-owned winery will welcome you like an old friend the moment you step on the premises! From the first second I entered Podrum Begić, I felt right at home! Your host will happily show you around the vineyards and the cellar. Bosnian hospitality is the most important for him, so you will not leave his house without having tasted some amazing Herzegovinian products such as cheese or proscuitto coming directly from his neighbours. The farm-to-table approach is super important to him and everything is locally and organically sourced. Brane is the only wine maker planting Plavac Mali on his vineyard, and old grape variety from that micro-region that produces smooth and very drinkable red wine so don't miss out on that one!

🇩🇪 Brane, der Winzer dieses kleinen Familienbetriebs, wird dich wie einen alten Freund begrüßen, sobald du das Gelände betrittst! Von der ersten Sekunde an habe ich mich auf Podrum Begić wie zu Hause gefühlt! Dein Gastgeber Brane führt dich gerne durch die Weinberge und den Keller. Die bosnische Gastfreundschaft ist für ihn das Wichtigste, deshalb wirst du sein Haus nicht verlassen, ohne ein paar tolle herzegowinische Produkte wie Käse oder Proscuitto direkt von seinen Nachbarn probiert zu haben. Der "Farm-to-Table"-Ansatz ist ihm sehr wichtig und alles wird lokal und biologisch angebaut. Brane ist der einzige Winzer, der auf seinem Weinberg Plavac Mali anpflanzt, eine alte Rebsorte, die nur in diesem bestimmten Mikro-Klima wächst und einen sanften und sehr trinkbaren Rotwein hervorbringt, also lass dir das nicht entgehen!

🇬🇧 The term "carska vina" means "emperor's wine" and this winery's vineyards used to be exactly that: Vineyards producing wine for the Austro-Hungarian emperor and his court back in Vienna. Especially the Zilavka was loved and appreciated in Vienna. Today, this winery offers a delicious selection of wines from autochthonous and international grape varieties and committed itself to slow and organic food. Having a dinner amidst the wine barrels in the cellar is a one-of-a-kind experience!

🇩🇪 Der Begriff "carska vina" bedeutet "kaiserlicher Wein" und genau das waren die Weinberge dieses Weinguts früher auch: Weinberge, die Wein für den österreichisch-ungarischen Kaiser und seinen Hof in Wien produzierten. Besonders die Zilavka war in der Hofburg beliebt. Heute bietet das Weingut eine köstliche Auswahl an Weinen aus autochthonen und internationalen Rebsorten und hat sich der Slow Food Bewegung verschrieben. Ein Abendessen inmitten der Weinfässer im Keller ist ein einzigartiges Erlebnis!

A hot spot of Bosnian hospitality and wines

🇬🇧 The brothers Bojanić are among the nicest people I have ever met and you'll feel right at home in their wine cellar. They own a small winery only producing small quantities, focusing on superior quality. They plant the grape varieties typical for the region – such as Vranac (red) and Zilavka (white).

🇩🇪 Die Brüder Bojanić gehören zu den nettesten Menschen, die ich je kennen gelernt habe, und in ihrem Weinkeller wirst du dich sofort wie zu Hause fühlen. Sie besitzen ein kleines Weingut, das nur kleine Mengen produziert und sich auf hohe Qualität konzentriert. Sie bauen die für die Region typischen Rebsorten an - wie Vranac (rot) und Zilavka (weiß).

🇬🇧 This fairly new winery has a beautiful location and hotel with a pool. You can even stay overnight. Their wines are decent although nothing super special but the tasting experience is nice and if you like more of a fine dining experience.

🇩🇪 Dieses relativ neue Weingut hat eine schöne Lage und ein Hotel mit Pool. Du kannst hier sogar übernachten. Die Weine sind gut, wenn auch nichts Besonderes, aber das Tasting Erlebnis ist toll.

Is this the best wine in all of Bosnia-Herzegovina?

🇬🇧 It might be the best wine I ever drank...! Unfortunately, they do not have a tasting room (yet) but you can still call and arrange for a tasting and even though it's a little bit more of a rustic experience I still recommend you do – because their wines are incredibly good and don't have to hide before high-class French or Italian wines!

🇩🇪 Vielleicht ist Milas der beste Wein, den ich je getrunken habe...! Leider haben die Milas' (noch) keinen Tasting Room, aber du kannst anrufen und ein Tasting vereinbaren, und auch, wenn die Erfahrung vielleicht ein bisschen rustikaler ist: Mach es trotzdem! Denn ihre Weine sind unglaublich gut und müssen sich nicht vor hochklassigen französischen oder italienischen Weinen verstecken!

Biodynamic winery with beautiful premises

🇬🇧 As the only Bosnian winery producing biodynamic wines, this places is really worth a visit. They do have a wine that is produced according to the moon cycle and tastes incredibly interesting.

🇩🇪 Als einziges bosnisches Weingut, das biodynamische Weine herstellt, ist dieser Ort wirklich einen Besuch wert. Sie haben einen Wein, der nach dem Mondzyklus hergestellt wird und unglaublich interessant schmeckt.

Podrumi Andrija

Beautiful winery with impressive wine cellar

🇬🇧 Andrija is one of the bigger players so the tasting experience is not as intimate and private as in other wineries but the wines, views and mezze here are really good and it's interesting to see a bigger winery at work too!

🇩🇪 Andrija ist einer der größeren Weinkeller, daher ist das Tasting-Erlebnis nicht so intim und privat wie in anderen Weingütern, aber die Weine, die Aussicht und die Mezze hier sind wirklich gut und es ist auch interessant, ein größeres Weingut bei der Arbeit zu sehen!

Vinogradi Nuić

Modern vineyards with big variety of grapes

🇬🇧 Unfortunately, there is no tasting room or restaurant here yet - but it is currently under construction. Nuić is exciting, however, mainly because they grow many different grape varieties, for example old varieties from Croatia or even red wines from Portugal. Seeing and tasting their joy in experimentation is fun!

🇩🇪 Auch hier gibt es leider noch keinen Tasting Room oder ein Restaurant – es befindet sich aber gerade im Aufbau. Spannend ist Nuić aber vor allem, weil sie viele unterschiedliche Rebsorten anbauen, beispielsweise alte Sorten aus Kroatien oder sogar Rotweine aus Portugal. Ihre Experimentierfreude zu sehen und zu schmecken, macht Spaß!
