Planning Your Norway Adventure: When to Go and What to Expect
The best time to visit Norway depends a lot on what you want to experience – but for a classic road trip with hiking, camping, and visiting spectacular viewpoints, summer is definitely the top choice.
Mid June to Early September is the most popular travel period because:
All major mountain passes (e.g., Trollstigen, Sognefjellet, and the Lofoten Scenic Routes) are open and free of snow.
The days are extremely long – north of the Arctic Circle, the sun doesn’t set for weeks.
Hiking trails are generally well accessible, even at higher altitudes.
Campsites and supply points are open everywhere.
Tip: If you want to avoid the peak season in July, plan your trip for mid-June or late August to early September. The weather is often still stable, but there are fewer tourists.
Spring (May to Early June) & Autumn (Mid-September to October)
During these months, some highlights may already be inaccessible due to snow or road closures in the mountains. Many scenic routes in Norway open late or close early during the shoulder season.
However, September can still be a great month to visit — the weather is often mild, the autumn colors are beautiful, and the crowds have thinned out.
Winter (November to April)
Perfect for northern lights, skiing, and a winter atmosphere — but not suitable for road trips as many roads are closed and the weather can be unpredictable. The fjord areas tend to be rainy, while inland experiences deep winter conditions.
