What you need to know about Norway's Allemannsretten
One of the things that makes traveling in Norway so special is Allemannsretten – the Right to Roam. This traditional law gives everyone the freedom to explore nature, even on uncultivated private land. It allows you to hike, swim, camp, and enjoy the outdoors – as long as you show respect for nature, wildlife, and people living nearby.
⛺ Camping
You’re allowed to pitch your tent for free almost anywhere in nature, as long as you’re at least 150 meters away from the nearest house or cabin, and you stay no more than 2 nights in the same spot (unless you get permission from the landowner).
🚐 Campervans and Motorhomes
Technically, Allemannsretten doesn’t apply to vehicles – but many of the same principles are followed. If there’s no sign prohibiting it, you can usually stay overnight in your camper on rest areas or pullouts, as long as you don’t block traffic, park too close to homes, or damage nature. Always check for local signs, respect private property, and avoid soft or sensitive ground.
🌿 Respect nature
Take all your trash with you, use public toilets or dispose of waste responsibly, and don’t leave any trace behind. Norway’s wild beauty is a privilege – and we all have a responsibility to help keep it that way.
