My Honest Budapest Travel Tips (What I’d Do Again & What I’d Skip)
A few things I loved in Budapest, a few touristy spots still worth it, and a couple of things I’d skip next time.

Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is one of those cities that’s incredibly easy to fall in love with. Between the stunning architecture, beautiful cafés, historic landmarks, and the Danube views, it’s one of the most photogenic and enjoyable city breaks in Europe. But like every popular destination, there are a few things that are absolutely worth it, and a few that look better on Instagram than they feel in real life.
If I visited Budapest again, I would 100% do Fisherman’s Bastion at sunrise. It’s one of the most magical spots in the city early in the morning, and the views over the Danube and Parliament are unreal. My honest tip: don’t bother paying for the upper terrace. The free viewpoints already give you amazing views, and in my opinion, that’s more than enough.
Another thing I’d absolutely do again is seeing the Hungarian Parliament from the Buda side, especially around Batthyány tér. If you want that iconic postcard view, this is the place. Honestly, I think it’s even better than standing directly in front of the building. Sunrise or blue hour is the best time.
One place that’s definitely touristy but still worth it once is New York Café. It’s expensive, and the food is honestly not the best you’ll have in Budapest, but the atmosphere is stunning. If you go in knowing you’re mostly paying for the interior and the experience, it can still be worth it.
For food, one of my personal favorites is Gettó Gulyás. I’ve been there three times and always ordered the goulash soup— and I’d do it again every single time. If you want a place that feels more local and less overhyped, this is one I’d genuinely recommend.
If you want to do a Danube cruise, I’d keep it simple. In my opinion, the basic sightseeing or evening panorama cruise is enough. The real highlight is the view of the Parliament, the bridges, and the skyline — not necessarily the dinner. If you’re choosing between a cheaper standard cruise and a more expensive dinner option, I’d personally save the money unless you really want the full experience.
Budapest is also a city where walking makes a huge difference. Some of my favorite moments were just walking along the Danube, crossing Liberty Bridge, exploring Margaret Island, or wandering through the streets around the Basilica and the Jewish Quarter. Don’t overpack your itinerary too much — leave room to just explore.
If I had to sum it up: wake up early for the views, don’t pay for every “premium” version of an attraction, choose a few iconic places that are worth the atmosphere, and spend the rest of your time eating well, walking a lot, and enjoying the city at a slower pace. That’s where Budapest really shines.
