If you’re visiting Budapest for the first time, Buda Castle is one of those places you simply can’t skip. Sitting high above the Danube on Castle Hill, this huge historic palace complex was once home to Hungarian kings and today remains one of the city’s most iconic landmarks. Even if you don’t go inside the museums, it’s absolutely worth coming up here for the courtyards, terraces, architecture, and panoramic views over the Danube, Chain Bridge, Parliament, and the Pest side of the city. It’s less about “one single thing to see” and more about the full experience: wandering through the castle grounds, taking in the views, and soaking up that classic Budapest atmosphere. The whole area feels grand, historic, and incredibly photogenic — especially around sunset or blue hour.

Honest tip:
This is one of those classic Budapest must-sees, but the real magic is just wandering around the castle grounds and enjoying the views. You don’t have to do every museum to make it worth it — even just the courtyards, terraces, and panorama over the Danube are enough.

Price:
Free to explore the outdoor castle grounds and courtyards; paid only for museums, exhibitions, or special interiors like St. Stephen’s Hall. Standard museum tickets vary, with examples like HUF 4,900 for St. Stephen’s Hall or HUF 5,900for some combined tickets.
