Mtskheta, located just 20 minutes outside of Tbilisi, is a quaint town known colloquially as “Little Jerusalem” and revered for its immense cultural and religious significance. This picturesque city-museum serves as the former Georgian capital and the seat of the Georgian church. Its cobblestone streets are lined with towering monuments; the 4th century Samtavro St. Nino Church, the 4th - 5th century Antioch (St. Stephen First Martyr Church), and the 6th - 7th century Jvari Church all stand as tribute to Georgia's devotion to Christianity. Home to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, Mtskheta also offers an abundance of cultural and archaeological experiences, such as sampling the local cuisine, hiking in the nearby national parks or viewing ancient ruins outside the city. Whether you’re looking to reconnect with history, culture or faith, Mtskheta has something to offer everyone.
