Nijō Castle is an impressive flatland castle in Kyoto, Japan. It was built by the Tokugawa shogunate in 1601 and completed during the reign of Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1626. The castle features two concentric rings of fortifications including the Ninomaru Palace and Honmaru Palace as well as several gardens with carefully arranged stones and topiary pine trees. Inside the castle there is a great central keep known as the "tenshu" which was struck by lightning and burned to the ground in 1750. There are also hidden “nightingale floors” and doors where the shøgun's bodyguard can sneak out to protect him. Nijō Castle is truly an edo-period marvel, perfect for exploring its remarkable history and marveling at its artistic beauty.

There is a combined ticket for those who want to visit the Ninomaru Goten Palace, 1300 yen.
