Mývatn Lake is the heart of northern Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, a serene body of water surrounded by lava fields, pseudocraters, and geothermal activity. The lake itself is calm and reflective, providing a peaceful counterpoint to the dramatic, often steam-filled terrain around it.

In summer, the area comes alive with birdlife — ducks, geese, and other waterfowl thrive here, making it an ecological hotspot. Walking along the shoreline, we could admire the contrast between the lake’s tranquil surface and the jagged lava formations nearby, while the faint scent of sulfur from distant mud pools reminded us of the land’s geothermal energy.

The lake also offers easy access to several unique Icelandic features:

  • Pseudo craters like Skútustaðir, formed by steam explosions when lava met wetlands.

  • Nearby geothermal areas, such as Hverir or Námaskarð, where mud pots, fumaroles, and sulfuric vents create an otherworldly landscape.

  • Scenic drives and viewpoints along the lake’s perimeter, perfect for photography or a leisurely stop to enjoy the stillness.

Mývatn Lake feels like a meeting point of calm and chaos, where placid waters sit beside the remnants of volcanic eruptions and steaming geothermal vents. It’s a place to pause, breathe, and take in the scale and variety of Iceland’s northern landscapes.
