Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka are two of Kyoto’s most atmospheric historic streets, connecting Kiyomizu-dera with the wider Higashiyama area.
Think stone lanes, traditional wooden buildings, small souvenir shops, and plenty of snack stops along the way. It’s a great place to slow down and wander rather than rush through especially early morning before the crowds arrive.
Even if you’re not shopping, the streets themselves are part of the experience and one of the easiest ways to get that classic old-Kyoto feel.
Things to do around Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka:
Walk the stone-paved streets and explore the side alleys
Stop for matcha desserts or traditional sweets
Visit the Yasaka Pagoda (Hokan-ji Temple) viewpoint nearby
Browse small local craft and souvenir shops
Try street snacks like mochi or dango
Continue toward Kiyomizu-dera or down toward Gion for an easy walking route
