Small, quiet, wrapped in cedar trees. Peaceful winter atmosphere.

When you visit Jozankei Shrine in Hokkaido, expect a small, peaceful Shinto site tucked into the Jozankei Onsen valley that is best combined with a hot-spring day trip; take the direct bus from Sapporo to Jozankei and walk a few minutes from the bus terminal. There is no admission fee but facilities and English signage are limited, so bring cash for offerings and nearby shops, wear sturdy shoes for steps and potentially icy paths in winter, and be prepared for crowds at peak autumn foliage. Keep your visit quiet and respectful, use the usual shrine etiquette (bow, offer a coin, bow twice, clap twice, bow once), and know the shrine grounds are simple and quick to see as part of a larger Jozankei itinerary.
