The Māori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay on Lake Taupō are a spectacular and unique work of Māori art set high on the cliffs above the water, accessible only by boat or kayak. It is 14 metres above the lake and has become one of the must-see attractions in the central North Island!
This is a modern masterpiece created between 1976 and 1980 by master carver Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell and a small team of artists.
The carvings are best enjoyed via a scenic boat cruise from Taupō township or by kayaking across the lake, offering stunning views of the artwork set against Lake Taupō’s volcanic landscape! :)
