Ever wanted to see an active volcano? Well, luckily for you Poás Volcano is located only about 2 hours from San Jose and makes for the perfect half-day trip. Don’t expect to see lava here though, what you will see is a bright blue geothermic lake in the volcano’s crater- it looks almost like something from another universe! Once at the volcano you can check it out on the viewing platform or visit the onsite cafe and gift shop. This is easily one of the most popular things to do in San Jose and one I highly recommend.

One of the most important things to note about visiting Poas Volcano is the best time to visit. Poas Volcano is often covered in clouds, and this completely obstructs your view. For this reason, it is best to visit early in the morning as opposed to later in the day. This greatly increases your chances of seeing the crater.
