The Black Desert in Egypt is a unique region filled with volcano-shaped mounds that stretch about 30 km. These mounds are capped with basalt sills, giving them their distinctive black color. Some mounds reach up to 100 meters high and vary in composition, with some being dark iron quartzite and others more reddish iron sandstone. Fossilized remains of shrubs and woodlands have been found in the area, hinting at its lush past. In 2010, the discovery of a large dinosaur skeleton led to the Black Desert being declared a natural reserve.
