The Big Tree Trail winds through a stunning grove of ancient trees on Meares Island (Wah-nuh-jus–Hilth-hoo-is). Reach this hike by water taxi or kayak on a guided tour. I would recommend the latter for the full experience!

As you walk along a rustic, axe-hewn boardwalk, you’ll feel dwarfed by the towering, gnarled trees above. A highlight of the trail is the “Hanging Garden Tree”—a massive Western Red Cedar over 1,000 years old, hosting more than 15 other plant and tree species. It’s truly awe-inspiring.

This remarkable place was almost lost in 1984 when the British Columbia government approved plans for a logging company to clear-cut 90% of Meares Island. But it wasn’t theirs to offer.

The Tla-o-qui-aht and Ahousaht First Nations protested, setting up a blockade—an essential first step that led to the protection of Meares Island as the Tribal Park it is today.
