The Lower Spiral Tunnel Viewpoint overlooks one of two underground spiral tunnel structures that allows trains on the nearby Canadian Pacific Railway line ascend/descend steep Kicking Horse Pass.

Completed in 1909, these spiral tunnels solved a huge construction challenge. The tunnels are now a National Historic Site.

Depending on timing, you may be lucky and see a train pass through this impressive structure while standing at the viewpoint. About 25-30 trains pass through every day.

Even if you manage to see it, a stop here is worthwhile to read the interpretive displays about the importance of the railway to Canada and also Yoho National Park (quite simply, both are unlikely to exist as we know them now without it).

A Parks Canada parks pass is required to stop here. The cost is $22/day for a vehicle of up to 7 people.
