Maligne Lake is best known for Spirit Island, which sits just over half-way down the lake. Though technically a peninsula, this tiny forested island provides the focus of one of Canada's most magnificent, and iconic, views. It is also a place of great spiritual significance for local Indigenous people.

Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris painted the classic Spirit Island scene in 1924 and Kodak included a photo of Spirit Island in a popular showcase displayed in New York City in the 1960s.

Spirit Island is only reachable by water. There are two ways to get there -

By boat

Maligne Lake Cruise runs tours to Spirit Island up to 14 times a day from late May to early October. The tours last 1.5 to 2 hours, with 15 minutes at the Spirit Island viewpoint.

By kayak, canoe or electric boat

Spirit Island is situated 14km from the Maligne Lake public boat dock at Home Bay. It is possible to paddle to Spirit Island in one long day (experienced paddlers) or as part of a multi-day paddling trip (more novice friendly).
