The Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland is a rock relief designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and crafted into the cliff face in 1820 to 1821. This memorial was built to recognize and honor the Swiss Guard’s loyalty and bravery after they lost their lives while defending the Tuileries Palace during the French Revolution.

Modelled after a dying lion impaled with a spear, this heartbreaking monument is a must-see for anyone visiting Switzerland. It is even praised by American author Mark Twain as “the most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world".

I don't know if I should tell you...but very few people realise that there are not one but TWO different animals carved in the rock face. It's the work of the angry sculptor (long story short, he wasn't paid duly for his work and wanted to take revenge!)

While he didn't alter the sculpture itself out of respect of the fallen soldiers, he changed the shape of the alcove where the lion lay to resemble the outline of a PIG!

Now look at the monument and tell me if you see it!
