Length & Duration: 6.8 km | 2.5–3 hours | Moderate
Overview:
Trilho da Lagoinha is an official hiking route (PRC 03 TER) that starts and ends near Serreta, offering access to one of the most atmospheric natural locations on the island: the secluded crater lake of Lagoinha. This trail leads you through the damp, emerald forest of Terceira’s highlands, past moss-covered trees, ancient volcanic formations, and endemic flora that give the route an almost prehistoric feeling.
Why Hike This Trail:
Reach the mysterious and photogenic Lagoinha
Walk through magical, mist-laden forest paths with lush vegetation
Encounter local flora such as Azorean heather and laurel trees
A tranquil experience with very few other hikers
Trail Notes:
Terrain can be muddy and slippery, especially after rain — sturdy boots are essential
Weather can change quickly; fog is common but adds to the mystique
Best hiked in the morning for clearer views and better light
Surroundings:
Located within a nature reserve area near the parish of Serreta
Encompasses part of Terceira’s central volcanic plateau
Occasionally intersects with forest access roads and other unmarked paths

Insider Tip: Don’t rush. This isn’t a trail for speed but for immersion — stop and listen to the sounds of the forest, spot birds, and breathe in the freshness of one of the most untouched parts of the island.
